00:00:02.110 --> 00:00:12.119

Hong Lieu: Hello, welcome to another episode of SBCC Vaquero Voices - a podcast highlighting the unique voices that comprise our campus culture, and how we're all working together to serve our students and the community at large.

2

00:00:12.200 --> 00:00:14.119

Hong Lieu: As usual, I'm joined by co-host Akil Hill.

3

00:00:14.120 --> 00:00:15.150

Akil Hill: Was good. Y'all.

4

00:00:15.390 --> 00:00:18.950

Hong Lieu: And today we're honored to welcome Miles Evans to the show. Welcome miles.

5

00:00:18.950 --> 00:00:19.820

Akil Hill: Welcome miles!

6

00:00:19.820 --> 00:00:20.800

Miles Evans: Thanks for having me.

7

00:00:21.010 --> 00:00:28.550

Hong Lieu: Another. Sbcc, yeah, another Sbcc alum, and also forthcoming Olympian congratulations. I know it's a big accomplishment.

8

00:00:28.550 --> 00:00:29.290

Akil Hill: Yes.

9

00:00:29.290 --> 00:00:36.390

Hong Lieu: And especially for someone like you who came to volleyball, I guess. Kind of late you didn't start playing until like high school. Is that true?

10

00:00:36.580 --> 00:00:38.279

Miles Evans: Yeah. Second year of high school.

11

00:00:38.280 --> 00:00:41.229

Hong Lieu: So were you. Were you playing basketball first, st or we're just kinda

12

00:00:41.970 --> 00:00:46.089

Hong Lieu: I mean, what was the pole to volleyball? Where was that transition like.

13

00:00:46.140 --> 00:00:54.867

Miles Evans: Yeah, I definitely played basketball growing up. And then I remember my health teacher and in high school was the fresh, soft coach, and he's like, Hey, you gotta play

14

00:00:55.436 --> 00:01:01.110

Miles Evans: you're pretty tall. I remember the the cutest girls on my school playing, so I was like, alright. That sounds pretty good, you know.

15

00:01:02.510 --> 00:01:07.680

Hong Lieu: That that whatever it takes right, whatever kind of moves you over, I mean the skill sets definitely transfer.

16

00:01:07.830 --> 00:01:28.890

Hong Lieu: you know, and then and then that, and then I mean you. You played at Sbcc. We'll get to that in a second. You also played at Ucsb. But you've been a pro for a little while now. So, in terms of preparing for something like the Olympics. Is it a huge transition, or is it not that much different is your routine kind of the same, or is it I mean, do you go there early to check out the sand? Or what's what's the process like in terms of Olympics versus your normal Avp. Stuff.

17

00:01:29.520 --> 00:01:32.989

Miles Evans: Yeah, it's definitely way different the competition is like

18

00:01:33.070 --> 00:01:54.030

Miles Evans: over 2 weeks. So it's very spread out. Usually the Avp and other tournaments are about 3 or 4 days long, and we play 3 or 4 matches a day. This one we're gonna be playing one match every other day. And so it's very spread out. We know kind of who we're gonna play, and we get to gear up and and plan for that. Usually we don't know kind of until the night before.

19

00:01:54.030 --> 00:02:12.410

Miles Evans: So it's very different. We're gonna be able to go a week before we leave tomorrow. And so we get to kind of get situated kind of feel out how that's you know how the stands gonna be? We're playing right underneath the Eiffel Tower, which is, gonna be super awesome. Such an iconic place, so really excited.

20

00:02:12.760 --> 00:02:18.140

Hong Lieu: You get to get a chance check out that Olympic village for everyone else. Kind of kind of get to lay the land. I see, that's cool.

21

00:02:18.260 --> 00:02:29.160

Hong Lieu: and then and then I guess with you know, you have your partner, Chase Buttinger, who is you've only just started playing with, I mean. But yeah, y'all have been playing y'all played with different partners before. Is it kind of.

22

00:02:29.460 --> 00:02:39.604

Hong Lieu: I don't know? Is it not like a relationship, but in terms of like you have other partners. But you, is it kinda hard to ask someone to play with you? Or is it just kinda like, you know, like I don't know.

23

00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:56.940

Miles Evans: You know. Honestly, it ends up being like a relationship, because you guys have to communicate in such a positive way. You know, if you if you don't communicate. Well, you guys are gonna be pissed. So you know, at the end of the day it was. It was interesting. We went. We met for coffee, and we both were like, Hey, do you want to go an Olympic run?

24

00:02:57.040 --> 00:03:02.600

Miles Evans: And we we practice right away. We had a system that we were. We're planning to do. And

25

00:03:02.680 --> 00:03:12.309

Miles Evans: we we implemented that system right away. We hired a coach, you know, we had to create our own team, which is different than most other sports.

26

00:03:13.350 --> 00:03:16.900

Hong Lieu: Yeah, someone who fears rejection like I. I don't think I could do that just.

27

00:03:17.835 --> 00:03:18.770

Miles Evans: Yeah.

28

00:03:18.770 --> 00:03:25.939

Hong Lieu: I'd have to. I'd be a kick to the curve and have someone just ask me or something. But yeah, no, I don't think I could roll like that. But that's a good icebreaker, Olympic. Run! Just go for that.

29

00:03:26.506 --> 00:03:27.073

Miles Evans: Right.

30

00:03:28.350 --> 00:03:29.090

Hong Lieu: Yeah.

31

00:03:30.140 --> 00:03:37.279

Akil Hill: I mean, will will you be facing in the Olympics? Will you be facing some people that are on the tour the Avp Tour already. So do you know certain

32

00:03:37.320 --> 00:03:43.589

Akil Hill: people's styles of play? Or is that? Is it all? Gonna be 1st time competing.

33

00:03:43.920 --> 00:03:47.833

Miles Evans: Good question. We so the Avp. Is mostly all American teams.

34

00:03:48.508 --> 00:04:03.389

Miles Evans: There's maybe like one or 2 foreign teams. But this Olympics. There's Miles Partaine and Andy Benish, who also qualified for the Olympics, and it was funny because they're drawing our names to to pick the pools, and we ended up

35

00:04:03.390 --> 00:04:19.419

Miles Evans: in their pool. But there's a rule that says, like the 2 American teams can't play against each other in the 1st round. So we got bumped to another pool. But yeah, we know them really well. We played against them a number of times. They've locked in that number. One spot in the Us. And so they're really good team.

36

00:04:20.390 --> 00:04:29.720

Hong Lieu: I mean I I know you know it's Olympics. Is you represent your country. You definitely want the gold. But at the end of day. If an American takes the gold, are you gonna be okay with that? Or.

37

00:04:29.960 --> 00:04:47.809

Miles Evans: Yeah, you know, we have to cheer against each other leading up to the Olympics, because we're directly, you know, competing with each other. But now that we're in the Olympics, we want the best for them as long as we're not playing at the end of the day, and if we meet them in the finals. Then, you know, we're all stoked, you know. America will be stoked.

38

00:04:48.790 --> 00:04:49.430

Hong Lieu: Very cool.

39

00:04:49.430 --> 00:04:51.280

Akil Hill: Absolutely super cool.

40

00:04:51.730 --> 00:05:18.139

Hong Lieu: And I guess before we head on to the next thing I do want to ask in terms of Santa Barbara is a volleyball hotbed. I think of it a lot like Punk Rock, because Punk Rock is like La and Oc. Is like the birthplace of West Coast Punk Rock. But Santa Barbara has this low key really rich history with Rkl. And stuff like that? Volleyball. I think of the same way. Everyone thinks of Formosa Huntington Beach, but the greatest, probably the greatest beach volleyball player of all time is from Santa Barbara. So is it one of those things that

41

00:05:18.140 --> 00:05:37.810

Hong Lieu: help kind of when you made the choice to go from basketball to volleyball, was it? Was there just a lot of volleyball people just around you at all times, or was it. The I mean, the just, the the area just going to the beach and just getting pickup games, having pickup games available. Does that kind of like environment and Vibe kinda help you and help people in this area kind of gravitate to the sport, you think, or you know.

42

00:05:37.810 --> 00:05:39.369

Miles Evans: Absolutely, you know.

43

00:05:39.950 --> 00:06:09.040

Miles Evans: Santa Barbara has a really rich culture and and high level volleyball, indoor and beach, and when I 1st played, you know, we had really good teammates. That were able to bounce the ball like 40 feet in the air. You know they were super good, and I always wanted to do that, and then, like you said, going down to East Beach, there would always be people to play on the weekends, you know, and a lot of my friends at Santa Barbara City College, my teammates. Actually, we just go down to the beach right after practice, and then just go have some fun and play on the beach, and

44

00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:11.839

Miles Evans: and like started, you know the the

45

00:06:11.850 --> 00:06:16.819

Miles Evans: be loving beach volleyball, the dream, the you know, the love for the sport. At the end of the day.

46

00:06:18.130 --> 00:06:19.190

Hong Lieu: Yeah, 3 weeks.

47

00:06:19.190 --> 00:06:21.099

Akil Hill: So you went to Dp high school right.

48

00:06:21.410 --> 00:06:21.730

Miles Evans: Yeah.

49

00:06:21.730 --> 00:06:30.632

Akil Hill: So. So I I noticed, like, you know, from being I'm I myself is local. I'm local. I would Sp. But we won't get into that conversation right now. But

50

00:06:31.150 --> 00:06:36.659

Akil Hill: I've noticed that Beach vivald now is a sport in

51

00:06:37.215 --> 00:06:43.229

Akil Hill: our local high schools, and so was that there when you were in high school or.

52

00:06:43.500 --> 00:06:53.177

Miles Evans: No, no, unfortunately they they built the nicest facility beach volleyball facility when I left, and I'm like, Well, that's awesome. But I didn't get that shot, you know.

53

00:06:54.120 --> 00:06:55.949

Hong Lieu: That's the house that Miles built. That's the house that.

54

00:06:55.950 --> 00:06:58.419

Akil Hill: The house of I was built. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.

55

00:06:58.626 --> 00:07:01.309

Hong Lieu: They'll put the statue in front once you come back with the gold.

56

00:07:01.310 --> 00:07:08.779

Miles Evans: Right. It's cool. They put the banners up on our our gym of me, you know, and a couple of other Olympians, and it was really nice and rewarding to see that.

57

00:07:09.300 --> 00:07:21.250

Hong Lieu: Awesome, very cool. So yeah, we're segwaying into our next segment. We would normally call it what brought you to Sbcc. But in your case, we're gonna just ask you like, what? What brought you to Sbcc as a student? And how did Sbcc kind of shape?

58

00:07:21.270 --> 00:07:30.250

Hong Lieu: You know your path moving forward because you mentioned. You know you went to Ucsb. From there. Then you went to Avp. But you know, what what did. What do you remember most about Sbcc. And how did it shape your path? Kind of forward as an athlete?

59

00:07:30.840 --> 00:07:38.930

Miles Evans: Yeah, you know, I would say I was planning to go to Santa Barbara City City College all along. It's such a great school beautiful campus

60

00:07:39.656 --> 00:07:54.293

Miles Evans: and my sister went there before. So I actually got recruited to Ucsb. Northridge in Hawaii. But I didn't take my sats because I was planning to go to Santa Barbara City College. So I kinda I was forced into it a little bit, even though I was recruited to some of those schools.

61

00:07:54.610 --> 00:07:57.290

Miles Evans: and I loved it, you know, at the end of the day

62

00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:12.219

Miles Evans: I met a lot of friends great friends that are still my friends today. And just the culture. They're great school. It's super affordable, which was really nice, you know. You don't have to pay 75 KA year like pepper dine, or some of the other schools.

63

00:08:13.030 --> 00:08:14.179

Miles Evans: And yeah, like

64

00:08:14.740 --> 00:08:18.507

Miles Evans: the volleyball team was really great. I had some great coaches.

65

00:08:18.960 --> 00:08:29.769

Miles Evans: and it was it was a very rewarding experience, you know. I'm glad that I was able to go there, and I ended up being the State leader in kills, which was pretty insane. And so

66

00:08:29.950 --> 00:08:37.980

Miles Evans: not a whole lot of people transfer to a division one school after that, and I was very thankful at the end of the day to go from Santa Barbara City College, and I'm.

67

00:08:38.909 --> 00:08:52.351

Hong Lieu: And that prototypical Sbcc for a couple of years transfer to Ucsb, I mean, it just makes sense for a lot of folks in the area and around. If you wanna go to Ucsb, Sbcc is kind of a great ticket in. And then so in terms of transferring, you played

68

00:08:52.859 --> 00:09:00.719

Hong Lieu: indoor volleyball at Ucsb. And then you transfer to Beach after you graduated. Were you playing? Was there? They don't cause they don't have a beach volleyball team at Ucsb at all. So.

69

00:09:00.720 --> 00:09:24.390

Miles Evans: Yeah. So they don't have a beach team. I definitely played indoor for them for the last for those 2 years. But I was also competing in the summertime just playing random events all over the Us. Trying to get better and better. And they they translate very well. So if you get better at beach, then your indoor games can be better as well. So it was really nice for me to kind of just play mostly in the summertime, and then.

70

00:09:24.734 --> 00:09:32.689

Miles Evans: you know, come back to to indoor. And then once I was done with Ucsb. Then I I moved to her, most of each to pursue beach volleyball, professionally.

71

00:09:33.320 --> 00:09:57.399

Hong Lieu: And I guess I I as someone who played like just basic recreational volleyball, the transition from indoor to beach, I mean, there's so much more ground to cover. You're you're so much, I mean, how difficult do you just need a coach? Need someone to help you? Or in terms of like, what was that transition like going? I mean, it's it's not like you're playing both. But at a certain point you had to, you know, going back and forth. It probably can be a little tough in terms of duties assigned and all that stuff. So I mean, what was that process like for you?

72

00:09:58.140 --> 00:10:08.209

Miles Evans: Yeah, you know, when I moved down here we had to hire a coach, you know. I'm so used to having a coach already for the team, you know, and so when we moved down here, we had to

73

00:10:08.670 --> 00:10:38.369

Miles Evans: figure out how to do it the right way, you know, cause when I was playing for fun in the summertime playing tournaments. I was just learning on my own, and so moving down here is when I took it very like a lot more serious. And it was like now it became a job which was really interesting because it was fun for me before. Now it became a full on business in like a workplace. So it took away a little bit of the fun. But at the end of the day I'm playing my passion, my sport for a job. So you know, definitely blessed and thankful.

74

00:10:39.050 --> 00:11:06.789

Hong Lieu: So I guess along those lines the question would be for prospective athletes or people listening to this in terms of that transition, that little, is it? Just? It's a little adjustment in terms of I'm having fun. But I'm really good. How do you really buckle down and get serious? Because is that something that comes from within it, I mean, or do you just need someone to really like Asian parent you and be like, no, no, you got to really like, lock it in. Does that come from within, or is that something that had to develop from outside.

75

00:11:07.010 --> 00:11:09.200

Hong Lieu: you know? Or is it both? Probably both? But.

76

00:11:09.650 --> 00:11:23.201

Miles Evans: You know it's a great question. I had the motivation, but I had a a mentor that moved down to Hermosa Beach right after I graduated college, and he was like, Hey, you should come down to Hermosa Beach, take or pursue beach volleyball professionally

77

00:11:23.863 --> 00:11:36.509

Miles Evans: and see how it goes, you know. Give yourself a shot. And so that was kind of a big motivator for me to try and I had some successes right away when I 1st moved down here, and that definitely kept the motivation high, you know. And

78

00:11:36.760 --> 00:11:56.609

Miles Evans: it's it's so different than indoor you have to. You have to rep things out like crazy. It's just such a different game. So I had to just learn everything and and build the confidence because the guys at the top level are so good. And I always struggled with the confidence just because the level disparity was so so high. There.

79

00:11:58.580 --> 00:12:01.549

Akil Hill: that's a good point. I was thinking a little bit like

80

00:12:02.090 --> 00:12:03.779

Akil Hill: you know, about

81

00:12:03.870 --> 00:12:26.900

Akil Hill: the mental piece of beach volleyball like. So you know when you're on a team like someone else can pick up the slack right if you're having an off off game right? But so the mental piece of beach volleyball. Maybe you can talk a little bit about what are some of the nuances that people don't really think about when they're watching the game, you know.

82

00:12:26.900 --> 00:12:38.030

Miles Evans: Totally yeah, like 2 on 2. You know. You gotta cover the whole court. There's no substitutions. There's no hiding anyone. It's you've got it. You're involved in every play. And so

83

00:12:38.520 --> 00:12:46.996

Miles Evans: it's it's it's very stressful. You know, people are just gonna pick on you. And I would say, you're you have to be very humble to play this sport. And

84

00:12:47.380 --> 00:13:04.819

Miles Evans: you know, this year I started working with a sports psychologist for the 1st time, and I would say, that's helped me immensely, because this game is so mental. You know, they people just pick on you at the end of the day, and so I was able to come up with some really good tools, to to deal with some of the pressure and

85

00:13:04.930 --> 00:13:11.829

Miles Evans: and kind of moving on from the frustration, and then kind of coming back to to to the present state, you know.

86

00:13:12.760 --> 00:13:25.059

Hong Lieu: That's interesting, because that's something. My son. My son's only 10. He's not playing sports or anything. But he he struggled that a lot in terms of. I try to teach him about like recovery techniques, because when he messes up or does something wrong, he gets stressed out and pulling himself back. Sometimes

87

00:13:25.060 --> 00:13:48.700

Hong Lieu: it takes a while. And and for me, I try to, you know, have them focus on the context, like what's more important, less important. But at the same time, I also tell them these are universal problems that will be with you. It's not gonna go away like, you know, you get better at it. But even I have the same thing. So it's good to know that even, you know, even really accomplished folks like yourself that really, I mean, it's still just a thing. It's like, it's like you can get better at it. And you can have help. And you can have psychologists and that. But

88

00:13:48.700 --> 00:14:00.360

Hong Lieu: it's always just gonna be within yourself to run that run that gauntlet and be like, okay, let's put this in perspective, you know, like everything everything was standing, and then and then you come on the other side, and you can deal with it, you know. So that's that's yeah.

89

00:14:00.360 --> 00:14:23.109

Miles Evans: One thing one thing I would say is that I've learned from the the best of the best is that it happens to everyone. It's just how fast you can get yourself back to the present state and not be so frustrated about what just happened, and move on the faster you can move on from the past and be more in the present and be more proactive the better you're going to be. And I think the top elite

90

00:14:23.140 --> 00:14:33.529

Miles Evans: athletes in every sport. That's what they're the best at. And that's what I've learned through watching a ton of videos and documentaries and and things like that, and as far as playing myself.

91

00:14:34.970 --> 00:14:41.920

Hong Lieu: Yeah, not not the Asian parent way of just repressing it and pushing it in, and then like just snapping at some point right.

92

00:14:42.210 --> 00:14:49.669

Akil Hill: No, I think that's such a good point, because I I feel like, and then you probably can attest to this is as you go higher and higher to each level.

93

00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:51.500

Akil Hill: Everybody's great.

94

00:14:51.610 --> 00:15:01.890

Akil Hill: everybody's good. Everyone's gifted. Everyone has certain tools in their bag that you know, I mean. So at some point is a shift of being the physically

95

00:15:02.400 --> 00:15:07.489

Akil Hill: the best player on the court to actually going to mentally, because everybody's good.

96

00:15:07.880 --> 00:15:08.740

Miles Evans: Totally.

97

00:15:09.320 --> 00:15:25.720

Miles Evans: Yeah. You know, it's a that's a that's a great point, you know. That's why I think the mental training is so important, at least for me this year. I always struggle with the mental aspect. I would be nervous, you know so much that I wouldn't be able to play my game. And now I found ways to kind of

98

00:15:26.040 --> 00:15:43.000

Miles Evans: like. Accept that nervousness and use that as fuel to be more competitive. And you're going to have to deal with these mental things from day to day, whether it's your job or whether it's volleyball and the better that you can kind of work on that the better you're going to be.

99

00:15:43.630 --> 00:15:44.400

Akil Hill: Yeah.

100

00:15:45.330 --> 00:16:04.450

Hong Lieu: And and I'm sure that the qualifying process helped you with a lot of practice there. But even like tying it back to the segment, your time in Sbcc, your time at Ucsb, I mean, it's just every step is certain challenges and every it's the same emotions, just different circumstances. And then you just and then just like kind of growing and evolving. So it's yeah, very cool.

101

00:16:04.450 --> 00:16:05.160

Miles Evans: Alright!

102

00:16:05.420 --> 00:16:21.079

Akil Hill: Speaking, speaking of fuel, I mean, Hong and I were talking before. we start the podcast. And Hong. I think it has the best question. I think it's a good segue to the question of fuel getting amped up hyped up so, Hong, I was talking about asking

103

00:16:21.270 --> 00:16:23.450

Akil Hill: you what is the hype? Song.

104

00:16:24.520 --> 00:16:25.080

Miles Evans: Oh!

105

00:16:25.080 --> 00:16:26.810

Hong Lieu: Yeah, when you're practicing, when you're training.

106

00:16:26.810 --> 00:16:27.450

Akil Hill: What is your.

107

00:16:27.450 --> 00:16:31.180

Hong Lieu: Is there something in the headphones before you get out? That's like, okay, let's do this or.

108

00:16:31.750 --> 00:16:51.171

Miles Evans: There. So I listen to mostly like Edm and house music, and there's not necessarily like one song, but I've got like a playlist that I put together fisher man like I'm kind of drawing a blank on some of the names, but they're so good they fire me up, you know it gets that blood flowing. I'm like shoulders back.

109

00:16:51.470 --> 00:16:58.006

Hong Lieu: So just like the the classic house you don't need like the hardcore like 8,000 Bpm, like like.

110

00:16:59.280 --> 00:17:07.729

Miles Evans: You know. Yeah, Fisher is one of my all time favorites. So if anything that he he posts or anything he has like, I'm in.

111

00:17:07.730 --> 00:17:16.370

Hong Lieu: Yeah, cause I mean, yeah, you gotta hear your teammates so you can't have earbuds in while you're playing. But you know, like, when you're when you're just kind of stretching, or whatever getting ready to go like, there's gotta be something I figured. So

112

00:17:16.630 --> 00:17:17.799

Hong Lieu: yeah, for sure.

113

00:17:17.800 --> 00:17:27.267

Akil Hill: Do you have any rituals like you do before, like, you know, like how tennis players they bounce a ball like a few times in between, you know. With the racket they every single time.

114

00:17:28.940 --> 00:17:58.450

Miles Evans: Yeah. So we we as a team have a ritual which is been really beneficial. I think. We have some. We do some breathing techniques right before our match. And we try to visualize kind of like how the games gonna go. Try to mostly just stay present and let go of some of the outside things that might be in your mind, and that's really helped me to kind of just like, relax a little bit and just try to stay as present as possible, you know, and so that that ritual has been like really beneficial for me.

115

00:17:59.920 --> 00:18:13.369

Hong Lieu: Alright segwaying. Speaking of ritual segue into our food section, good eaten. If you have a favorite meal or a current meal that you're really, you know, enjoying whether it's something you cooked or a restaurant you go to regularly if you wanna just let us know wh what's going on.

116

00:18:14.130 --> 00:18:17.766

Miles Evans: I have. Alright, I'll give you breakfast and dinner, so breakfast

117

00:18:18.310 --> 00:18:25.610

Miles Evans: usually oatmeal before practice, and then I'll have a breakfast burrito, and it's pretty consistent. I'll have ground turkey.

118

00:18:25.730 --> 00:18:36.789

Miles Evans: eggs, cheese, avocado, and potatoes, and like that's pretty hearty. It's got carbs. It's got the fats. It's got the protein and then.

119

00:18:37.040 --> 00:18:56.949

Miles Evans: after practice and kind of somewhat dinner, I'll always eat like chicken or fish with sweet potatoes and broccoli, some bell peppers, you know. What else, and a little bit of rice sometimes, and that, like for me, has just been super healthy, and you know I can rely on that. That fuel

120

00:18:57.210 --> 00:18:58.550

Miles Evans: at the end of the day.

121

00:18:59.050 --> 00:19:03.732

Hong Lieu: Are you cooking this yourself? You're not going anywhere because I mean, you gotta prep those potatoes in the morning. Right? And you gotta do.

122

00:19:04.220 --> 00:19:11.439

Miles Evans: Dinner. I'll cook myself. But the breakfast burritos we we've got a place in her, most of that. I go to pretty consistently.

123

00:19:11.440 --> 00:19:14.988

Hong Lieu: You wanna shout them out or you wanna keep it a keep it a secret.

124

00:19:15.210 --> 00:19:25.447

Miles Evans: Oh, if they want here the brothers Burritos is solid. You can create any burrito you want. They're awesome. They got all kinds of ingredients. So Brothers Burritos meant.

125

00:19:26.040 --> 00:19:35.070

Hong Lieu: Oh, multiple locations. Nice. Yeah. Cause I mean that that whole area is a is a strong like you. All the tournaments you are most of Manhattan, Huntington, you know, and and all that. So

126

00:19:35.220 --> 00:19:40.479

Hong Lieu: if you're in, if you're in town for an avp event, you go to see Miles play check out brother's burritos, get the breakfast burrito on.

127

00:19:40.690 --> 00:19:41.350

Miles Evans: Sure.

128

00:19:42.396 --> 00:19:43.170

Hong Lieu: Do you.

129

00:19:43.170 --> 00:19:50.660

Akil Hill: Do you have any staples that you did? Spots that you would love to hit up like what? When you're living in Santa Barbara like when you're in high school.

130

00:19:51.198 --> 00:19:53.110

Akil Hill: Like one of your classic spots.

131

00:19:53.855 --> 00:20:07.350

Miles Evans: Hamburger habit. They've moved. They're all over the place now, which is crazy. But I was always a a staple. What's the place losing gave Losa burrito. Oh, my gosh! The halibut burrito!

132

00:20:07.350 --> 00:20:09.380

Hong Lieu: Oh, with that drip. Oh, yeah, yeah, that.

133

00:20:09.380 --> 00:20:09.700

Akil Hill: Yeah.

134

00:20:09.700 --> 00:20:11.329

Hong Lieu: Sauce on the outside. Oh, yeah.

135

00:20:12.237 --> 00:20:18.389

Miles Evans: Yeah, those 2 spots are, you know, I would love to have if I could have like twice a week, maybe even more.

136

00:20:18.980 --> 00:20:22.539

Hong Lieu: Do you have time to come up to town at all regularly, or just every now and then.

137

00:20:22.810 --> 00:20:36.609

Miles Evans: Every now and then. My mom lives there. My sister lives there, and I'm just dude. I played 11 tournaments in the last 14 weeks. So that was that was pretty hectic. So I don't get to come home as much as I'd like, but I love Sambar, but you know I hope to retire there someday.

138

00:20:36.610 --> 00:20:44.600

Hong Lieu: Is there like an Avp spread like, do you have a buffet table in the back with like fruit or water, or something? Or are you just kinda supposed to bring your own for tournaments and stuff.

139

00:20:45.110 --> 00:21:02.410

Miles Evans: The Avp. Is now like kind of dialed it in, and some of the elite 16 tournaments they actually give us, like extremely good food and buffs the highest quality you can think of. So it's it's actually kind of rewarding like, alright like, I don't have to pay for food, and I am stoked.

140

00:21:02.780 --> 00:21:03.649

Hong Lieu: There we go.

141

00:21:03.850 --> 00:21:04.869

Hong Lieu: Good to hear.

142

00:21:05.580 --> 00:21:08.175

Hong Lieu: All right. Take us home. Our final section.

143

00:21:08.690 --> 00:21:09.889

Hong Lieu: higher learning.

144

00:21:10.260 --> 00:21:13.769

Hong Lieu: pop, culture, book, movie, film, TV, anything.

145

00:21:13.850 --> 00:21:18.470

Hong Lieu: anything, but it was now, or growing up, something that moved you. And really you want to share with Fred's listeners.

146

00:21:18.660 --> 00:21:19.610

Hong Lieu: Let's hear it.

147

00:21:20.040 --> 00:21:24.942

Miles Evans: Yeah. Relentless that book. I think Tim Grover is his name.

148

00:21:25.500 --> 00:21:26.630

Miles Evans: solid.

149

00:21:27.320 --> 00:21:31.440

Miles Evans: See that? Okay? Solid book. That definitely kind of

150

00:21:32.060 --> 00:21:39.660

Miles Evans: kept me like motivated, and to see like how Kobe and kind of Michael Jordan approach life. Really cool

151

00:21:40.520 --> 00:21:44.386

Miles Evans: interstellar favorite movie. I cry every time when

152

00:21:44.880 --> 00:21:54.130

Miles Evans: when he's leaving his child. It's it's really sad. But love that movie. And Rick and Mordi, I would say, is definitely one of my favorite shows.

153

00:21:55.130 --> 00:21:57.380

Miles Evans: Archer, another really good show.

154

00:21:57.450 --> 00:22:00.440

Miles Evans: Kind of off the top of my head. Game of thrones, for sure.

155

00:22:02.430 --> 00:22:03.669

Miles Evans: What else we got.

156

00:22:04.250 --> 00:22:26.359

Hong Lieu: Got a lot of great picks there to start with. Interstellar is Christopher Nolan one of it, and you know, like it's just that end always gets me, you know, like it, like the beginning is great, and it's like a great sci-fi movie. But the way they tie it up and wrap it up at the end. Then he's when he's peering out at the end. You know that I'm like, Oh, man it that it's just such a great film. And it you can kind of hit it on so many levels.

157

00:22:26.590 --> 00:22:39.590

Hong Lieu: you know, like it's, it's it's really good. I'm looking at the subtitle for this renown, this book from good to great to unstoppable. So it without giving everything away. Because we want people to read the books. You know, the suggestion that you have is there like a cliff? Notes like

158

00:22:39.680 --> 00:22:45.259

Hong Lieu: there's not one secret, of course, but I mean, is it just that that drive and termination.

159

00:22:45.350 --> 00:22:53.009

Hong Lieu: you know, like, well, you can't really teach it, can you? I mean, it has to, you know, like, is there something that people can grab onto? Yeah.

160

00:22:53.010 --> 00:23:06.060

Miles Evans: A little bit cause you understand that Kobe and Michael Jordan were kind of the crazy ones that were so relentless that it was just unbelievable. But you know you can learn from their examples and see that

161

00:23:06.090 --> 00:23:22.690

Miles Evans: there's a reason why they got to that level. And if you can even be one more like them. You're going to be more successful. So you know. Be relentless in your craft. Go all in, and something you're passionate about. You know that for me is like

162

00:23:23.030 --> 00:23:48.469

Miles Evans: one of the biggest takeaways in my Olympic run is, I'm so blessed that I was able to do that, and I'll have no regrets at the end of the day. Even if I didn't qualify for the Olympics, I would still have so much growth, and I've been through so many challenges that you know it's it's such a an awesome thing to be able to say that I put 100 into this journey, and you know I'm stoked that I was able to make it and be successful and be an Olympian.

163

00:23:50.150 --> 00:23:59.319

Hong Lieu: Yeah, not many people can say that. And and even less people can say that they're metal metal contenders like, like, definitely you and Chase are so.

164

00:24:00.040 --> 00:24:03.560

Akil Hill: Unless people can say that they interviewed one. So we've made it home.

165

00:24:03.560 --> 00:24:04.730

Hong Lieu: Thank you.

166

00:24:05.010 --> 00:24:05.750

Miles Evans: Bye.

167

00:24:05.750 --> 00:24:13.279

Akil Hill: Miles for making us achieve the bucket list. Quick question, Miles, are your parents into jazz?

168

00:24:14.220 --> 00:24:15.290

Miles Evans: Into jazz.

169

00:24:15.290 --> 00:24:19.564

Akil Hill: Yeah, just the name. Miles is such a like. You know what I mean. I wonder if you were.

170

00:24:19.790 --> 00:24:26.369

Miles Evans: I don't know. I don't think my mom was into jazz, but my mom pretty much got to choose. My dad didn't get the to choose my name

171

00:24:26.430 --> 00:24:32.191

Miles Evans: and my my mom's English, and she wanted Nigel. I'm like Dude. I'm so glad that.

172

00:24:32.920 --> 00:24:33.310

Hong Lieu: So.

173

00:24:33.780 --> 00:24:35.433

Miles Evans: Come on!

174

00:24:36.610 --> 00:24:37.970

Hong Lieu: You. Yeah.

175

00:24:38.100 --> 00:24:42.499

Hong Lieu: I can see where Miles can kind of hit better than Nigel in some ways. But yeah.

176

00:24:42.710 --> 00:24:45.230

Miles Evans: You know. No, no offense to any Nigel out there. I just.

177

00:24:45.230 --> 00:24:45.570

Akil Hill: Yeah.

178

00:24:45.570 --> 00:24:47.592

Miles Evans: That's that's that doesn't define me.

179

00:24:47.930 --> 00:24:48.600

Akil Hill: Yeah.

180

00:24:49.000 --> 00:24:51.630

Akil Hill: she chose correctly. That's such a dope.

181

00:24:52.220 --> 00:24:52.940

Miles Evans: I appreciate it.

182

00:24:52.940 --> 00:24:55.589

Hong Lieu: So so, Archer wise! Did you finish the whole series.

183

00:24:56.632 --> 00:24:59.229

Miles Evans: Dude, it's there's so many seasons.

184

00:24:59.230 --> 00:25:05.367

Hong Lieu: I tailed. I tailed off like 6 or 7 seasons, I gotta admit, but I I did love Archer. Something fierce.

185

00:25:05.660 --> 00:25:10.199

Miles Evans: For sure. I watched probably the 1st 8 seasons, and then I I also teetered off as well.

186

00:25:10.200 --> 00:25:20.120

Hong Lieu: They did like that flashback Miami vice year. Then they did that one season in the swamp, and then I. They were losing it around there, but I I hung on for a while because and then, hearing him and Bob's burgers always trips me out so.

187

00:25:20.120 --> 00:25:22.545

Miles Evans: I know it's true. Huh?

188

00:25:25.890 --> 00:25:39.449

Hong Lieu: So. Yes, thank you, Miles. You blazed through all of our segments so quickly. But you ran the gauntlet. You did everything good. Great job. Thank you so much. Good luck in the Olympics. Any parting words for our listeners before you sign off for today.

189

00:25:40.160 --> 00:25:46.173

Miles Evans: You know. Thank you for all the support check out my Instagram. Follow me if you can. Miles Evans. Vb.

190

00:25:46.868 --> 00:25:53.240

Miles Evans: yeah. Just excited to represent Santa Barbara represent our home country, and hopefully we get a medal on that podium.

191

00:25:54.240 --> 00:25:56.320

Hong Lieu: Absolutely good luck. Will we root for you miles.

192

00:25:56.320 --> 00:25:56.900

Akil Hill: We are totally.

193

00:25:56.900 --> 00:25:57.790

Hong Lieu: Looking for you.

194

00:25:57.970 --> 00:26:09.049

Hong Lieu: Yeah. Have enjoy yourself, too, cause it's it. I mean, enjoy the experience. It's, you know, like it's just such a great honor to be Olympian, represent the country, and also of all places in Paris. So yeah.

195

00:26:09.050 --> 00:26:10.370

Miles Evans: Yeah, for sure.

196

00:26:12.005 --> 00:26:12.300

Akil Hill: Yeah.

197

00:26:12.850 --> 00:26:14.000

Hong Lieu: Pretty much loved.

198

00:26:14.100 --> 00:26:15.950

Hong Lieu: Thank you. As always, Akil.

199

00:26:16.240 --> 00:26:16.609

Akil Hill: Like I mean.

200

00:26:16.610 --> 00:26:18.460

Hong Lieu: All this is vaquero voices. Take care y'all.

201

00:26:18.710 --> 00:26:19.040

Akil Hill: Peace.

202

00:26:19.040 --> 00:26:20.629

Miles Evans: Alright. You guys take care!

203

00:26:20.860 --> 00:26:21.180

Hong Lieu: Thanks.
